Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

If the eyes are truly the windows to the soul, heavy, drooping eyelids or under eye bags can serve as unattractive window dressings. Many of our patients complain of having tired looking eyes, even though they feel energetic and healthy. With age, eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and fat pockets bulge and become more prominent. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is very popular among our Jacksonville patients who want to improve these common signs of aging for a more alert, youthful eye appearance.

An Eye-Opening Procedure

Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging, or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient’s field of vision. Blepharoplasty can be combined with BOTOX® treatments to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet, or dark circles under the eyes.

Eyelid surgery can open up the eye area and produce cleaner, smoother eye margins. However, if there is significant sagging of the brows, this may require an additional surgical procedure.

Treatment to Transformation

Upper lid blepharoplasty involves making a fine incision concealed in the eyelid crease and removing a crescent of skin. At the same time, fat can be removed or repositioned and muscles altered for natural-looking, lasting results. The incisions are closed with sutures which will be in place for approximately 7 to 10 days.

Lower lid blepharoplasty typically utilizes a small incision made just beneath the lashes. This incision allows for the removal of skin and fat as well as muscle alterations. If there is no excess skin, a transconjunctival incision may be an option. This is an incision made inside the lower lid which produces no external scar.

This procedure is performed in our surgery center with local anesthesia and lasts 45 minutes to a few hours depending on how much work is done. Upper lid blepharoplasty is sometimes covered by insurance if the excess skin is interfering with vision and daily activities. The effects of blepharoplasty can last for a long time and are sometimes even permanent.
